Acts 17

Act 17:1 Traveling across Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came into Thessalonica, where there was a Judean synagogue.
Act 17:2 It was Paul’s habit to join them, and for three Sabbaths he debated the scriptures with them.
Act 17:3 He showed conclusively that the Anointed had to suffer and then rise from the dead, and that “this Jesus I am proclaiming to you is the Messiah.”
Act 17:4 Some of them were convinced and sided with Paul and Silas, including a great number of devout Greeks, a significant portion of which were prominent women.
Act 17:5 But this filled the Judeans with envy, so they collected some troublemakers and formed a mob to start a riot in the city. Then they prepared to attack Jason’s house and hunt down Paul and Silas so they could be taken to a public trial.
Act 17:6 But they couldn’t find them, so they dragged Jason and some believers to the city officials and claimed, “These people who are turning the whole world upside down have now come here too,
Act 17:7 and Jason took them into his home! They are defying the decrees of Caesar and saying there is another king called Jesus.”
Act 17:8 When they heard these things, the crowd and the city officials were very upset.
Act 17:9 So they made Jason and the rest post bail, then released them.
Act 17:10 The believers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night into Berea, where they went to the Judean synagogue.
Act 17:11 But these people were of more noble character than the Thessalonians. They eagerly accepted the Word and studied the scriptures each day to make sure these things were so.
Act 17:12 In fact, many of them came to faith, including respectable Greek women and a significant number of men.
Act 17:13 But when the Judeans in Thessalonica found out that Paul was now proclaiming the Word of God in Berea, they went there too, stirring up the crowd.
Act 17:14 So again the believers immediately sent Paul all the way to the coast, while Silas and Timothy stayed behind.
Act 17:15 Those who escorted Paul took him as far as Athens, and then they were instructed to tell Silas and Timothy to come to him as soon as possible.
Act 17:16 While Paul was waiting for them in Athens, he became intrigued with the opportunity presented by this idol-saturated city.
Act 17:17 He held debates with the Judeans in the synagogue, with devout people, and with whoever happened to show up in the markets each day.
Act 17:18 But then some Epicurean and Stoic philosophers had discussions with him. Some said “What is this babbler trying to say?” while others said “He seems to be proclaiming foreign gods,” since he brought them the Gospel about Jesus and his resurrection.
Act 17:19 So they took him to the Areopagos and said, “Tell us more about this new teaching you’ve been talking about.
Act 17:20 It sounds very strange to us, and we really want to know more about it.”
Act 17:21 (The residents of Athens, both permanent and transitory, loved nothing more than to discuss new ideas.)
Act 17:22 So Paul stood in the center of the Areopagos and addressed them: “People of Athens! I couldn’t help but notice how very focused you are on all sorts of spiritual things.
Act 17:23 As I passed through and considered your shrines, I found a particular one with this inscription: ‘To The Unknown God’. Allow me to introduce you to the One you venerate without knowing.
Act 17:24 “The God who made the world and all it contains is the Master of heaven and earth. So he does not live in temples made by human hands,
Act 17:25 nor does he need help from human hands. The One who gives life and breath to all has no need of anything.
Act 17:26 Further, from just one person he made every ethnic group there is, all over the world. He determined their appointed eras and boundaries
Act 17:27 so that they might seek him out and find him— though certainly he is not far from any of us.
Act 17:28 For it is due to him that we live and move and exist. Your own poets have said the same: ‘We too are his offspring’.
Act 17:29 “So then, being the offspring of God, we should not suppose that the divine is like gold, silver, or stone, or anything crafted by human design.
Act 17:30 Now God did in fact grant a pass to such ignorance before, but now he requires everyone everywhere to change their minds.
Act 17:31 For he has set a day in which he will fairly judge all the inhabitants of the world via the man he appointed. God vouched for him by raising him from the dead.”
Act 17:32 Now when they heard about the resurrection of the dead, some jeered but others said, “We would like to hear more about this again sometime.”
Act 17:33 So Paul left,
Act 17:34 but some folks joined him because they believed. Among them were Dionysius (a member of the Areopagos), a woman named Damaris, and various others.
Act 17:1 διοδευσαντες δε την αμφιπολιν και την απολλωνιαν ηλθον εις θεσσαλονικην ὁπου ην συναγωγη των ιουδαιων
Act 17:2 κατα δε το ειωθος τω παυλω εισηλθεν προς αυτους και επι σαββατα τρια διελεξατο αυτοις απο των γραφων
Act 17:3 διανοιγων και παρατιθεμενος ὁτι τον χριστον εδει παθειν και αναστηναι εκ νεκρων και ὁτι οὑτος εστιν ὁ χριστος ὁ ιησους ὁν εγω καταγγελλω ὑμιν
Act 17:4 και τινες εξ αυτων επεισθησαν και προσεκληρωθησαν τω παυλω και τω σιλα των τε σεβομενων ἑλληνων πληθος πολυ γυναικων τε των πρωτων ουκ ολιγαι
Act 17:5 ζηλωσαντες δε οἱ ιουδαιοι και προσλαβομενοι των αγοραιων ανδρας τινας πονηρους και οχλοποιησαντες εθορυβουν την πολιν και επισταντες τη οικια ιασονος εζητουν αυτους προαγαγειν εις τον δημον
Act 17:6 μη εὑροντες δε αυτους εσυρον ιασονα και τινας αδελφους επι τους πολιταρχας βοωντες ὁτι οἱ την οικουμενην αναστατωσαντες οὑτοι και ενθαδε παρεισιν
Act 17:7 οὑς ὑποδεδεκται ιασων και οὑτοι παντες απεναντι των δογματων καισαρος πρασσουσιν βασιλεα ἑτερον λεγοντες ειναι ιησουν
Act 17:8 εταραξαν δε τον οχλον και τους πολιταρχας ακουοντας ταυτα
Act 17:9 και λαβοντες το ἱκανον παρα του ιασονος και των λοιπων απελυσαν αυτους
Act 17:10 οἱ δε αδελφοι ευθεως δια νυκτος εξεπεμψαν τον τε παυλον και τον σιλαν εις βεροιαν οἱτινες παραγενομενοι εις την συναγωγην των ιουδαιων απηεσαν
Act 17:11 οὑτοι δε ησαν ευγενεστεροι των εν θεσσαλονικη οἱτινες εδεξαντο τον λογον μετα πασης προθυμιας καθ᾽ ἡμεραν ανακρινοντες τας γραφας ει εχοι ταυτα οὑτως
Act 17:12 πολλοι μεν ουν εξ αυτων επιστευσαν και των ἑλληνιδων γυναικων των ευσχημονων και ανδρων ουκ ολιγοι
Act 17:13 ὡς δε εγνωσαν οἱ απο της θεσσαλονικης ιουδαιοι ὁτι και εν τη βεροια κατηγγελη ὑπο του παυλου ὁ λογος του θεου ηλθον κακει σαλευοντες και ταρασσοντες τους οχλους
Act 17:14 ευθεως δε τοτε τον παυλον εξαπεστειλαν οἱ αδελφοι πορευεσθαι ἑως επι την θαλασσαν ὑπεμειναν τε ὁ τε σιλας και ὁ τιμοθεος εκει
Act 17:15 οἱ δε καθιστανοντες τον παυλον ηγαγον ἑως αθηνων και λαβοντες εντολην προς τον σιλαν και τον τιμοθεον ἱνα ὡς ταχιστα ελθωσιν προς αυτον εξηεσαν
Act 17:16 εν δε ταις αθηναις εκδεχομενου αυτους του παυλου παρωξυνετο το πνευμα αυτου εν αυτω θεωρουντος κατειδωλον ουσαν την πολιν
Act 17:17 διελεγετο μεν ουν εν τη συναγωγη τοις ιουδαιοις και τοις σεβομενοις και εν τη αγορα κατα πασαν ἡμεραν προς τους παρατυγχανοντας
Act 17:18 τινες δε και των επικουρειων και στοϊκων φιλοσοφων συνεβαλλον αυτω και τινες ελεγον τι αν θελοι ὁ σπερμολογος οὑτος λεγειν οἱ δε ξενων δαιμονιων δοκει καταγγελευς ειναι ὁτι τον ιησουν και την αναστασιν ευηγγελιζετο
Act 17:19 επιλαβομενοι τε αυτου επι τον αρειον παγον ηγαγον λεγοντες δυναμεθα γνωναι τις ἡ καινη αὑτη ἡ ὑπο σου λαλουμενη διδαχη
Act 17:20 ξενιζοντα γαρ τινα εισφερεις εις τας ακοας ἡμων βουλομεθα ουν γνωναι τινα θελει ταυτα ειναι
Act 17:21 αθηναιοι δε παντες και οἱ επιδημουντες ξενοι εις ουδεν ἑτερον ηυκαιρουν η λεγειν τι η ακουειν τι καινοτερον
Act 17:22 σταθεις δε ὁ παυλος εν μεσω του αρειου παγου εφη ανδρες αθηναιοι κατα παντα ὡς δεισιδαιμονεστερους ὑμας θεωρω
Act 17:23 διερχομενος γαρ και αναθεωρων τα σεβασματα ὑμων εὑρον και βωμον εν ὡ επεγεγραπτο αγνωστω θεω ὁ ουν αγνοουντες ευσεβειτε τουτο εγω καταγγελλω ὑμιν
Act 17:24 ὁ θεος ὁ ποιησας τον κοσμον και παντα τα εν αυτω οὑτος ουρανου και γης ὑπαρχων κυριος ουκ εν χειροποιητοις ναοις κατοικει
Act 17:25 ουδε ὑπο χειρων ανθρωπινων θεραπευεται προσδεομενος τινος αυτος διδους πασιν ζωην και πνοην και τα παντα
Act 17:26 εποιησεν τε εξ ἑνος παν εθνος ανθρωπων κατοικειν επι παντος προσωπου της γης ὁρισας προστεταγμενους καιρους και τας ὁροθεσιας της κατοικιας αυτων
Act 17:27 ζητειν τον θεον ει αρα γε ψηλαφησειαν αυτον και εὑροιεν και γε ου μακραν απο ἑνος ἑκαστου ἡμων ὑπαρχοντα
Act 17:28 εν αυτω γαρ ζωμεν και κινουμεθα και εσμεν ὡς και τινες των καθ᾽ ὑμας ποιητων ειρηκασιν του γαρ και γενος εσμεν
Act 17:29 γενος ουν ὑπαρχοντες του θεου ουκ οφειλομεν νομιζειν χρυσω η αργυρω η λιθω χαραγματι τεχνης και ενθυμησεως ανθρωπου το θειον. ειναι ὁμοιον
Act 17:30 τους μεν ουν χρονους της αγνοιας ὑπεριδων ὁ θεος τα νυν παραγγελλει τοις ανθρωποις παντας πανταχου μετανοειν
Act 17:31 καθοτι εστησεν ἡμεραν εν ἡ μελλει κρινειν την οικουμενην εν δικαιοσυνη εν ανδρι ὡ ὡρισεν πιστιν παρασχων πασιν αναστησας αυτον εκ νεκρων
Act 17:32 ακουσαντες δε αναστασιν νεκρων οἱ μεν εχλευαζον οἱ δε ειπαν ακουσομεθα σου περι τουτου και παλιν
Act 17:33 οὑτως ὁ παυλος εξηλθεν εκ μεσου αυτων
Act 17:34 τινες δε ανδρες κολληθεντες αυτω επιστευσαν εν οἱς και διονυσιος ὁ αρεοπαγιτης και γυνη ονοματι δαμαρις και ἑτεροι συν αυτοις
